Boerboel Mastiff
This site is based on our own experience with this beautiful "King of the Guard Dogs".
We have had 3 of these dogs so far, and we,ve loved them all.
We currently have two dogs left, our male, Balder and bitch, Phoebe.
Nike, our oldest bitch we had to put to sleep because of HD. (our two other dogs also have HD,
but do not show any signs of it. So beware of this, when you want to buy a dog.
Get good parents with nice hips!

Boerboel means "Farmer's dog" in Afrikaans. It is a molosser breed from South Africa. It is the only dog in the world, who is bred only to protect its owner anytime anywhere. It has extremely strong guard-dog instinct in a domestic situation. The whole family (including pets, chickens etc) is under a boerboel's protection. Our cat sometimes spend the night in the dog bed with Balder when Alfred (our cat) is out there to catch a mouse every now and then. No problem at all. It is obedient, very intelligent (On the first dog competition where they had to walk in line, obey, jump, etc. With 54 competing dogs, Balder got 1st. And Phoebe got 3rd. We didn’t even make a hard efford. They are just so intelligent, that they’ll learn tricks and stuff in minutes. Only problem is that because of their intelligense you have to be fair to them to make them work with you. It is a very functional working dog, but it is very dominant and needs a more dominant master.
